The Dutch Influence: VOLTAIRE II: Arguably New Zealand`s most successful sport horse stallion ever Voltaire II is an impressive looking horse who carries some of the world`s best competitive performance horse breeding.

At stud his deeds need little introduction to breeders he is the sire of many national champions and numerous top level performers both here and on the international equestrian scene.

VOLTAIRE: Approved as a Dutch Warmblood, Selle Fancais and Oldenburg stallion. During the 1980`s he was successful in Calgary, Stockholm, Lanaken, Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Wembley culminating in 1989 with a win in the Grand Prix of Berlin.

Strongly represented at Olympic level as a sire Voltaire is the sire of numerous stallions serving around the world today.

FURIOSO II: Considered a huge influence in the modern sport horse in Europe today he was, the full bother of another influential stallion Mexico who stood at the French National Stud. By the thoroughbred stallion Furioso in turn by the major thoroughbred stamina stallion Precipitation Furioso II was originally intended to improve the sport horse mare base. While he undoubtedly achieved this goal he also produced some of the best competition horses and breeding stallions known today. Voltaire is generally considered his most influential son.

NIMMERDOR: Performance tested in 1975 Nimmerdor excelled in the jumping phase and went on to a successful show jumping career eventually being selected for the Los Angles Olympics (he did not attend due to breeding commitments). Nimmerdor has proved himself as both a sire and sire of sires and was elected “the Stallion of the 20th Century in the Netherlands`



The Thoroughbred Influence:
Standing a full 16.2hh Much Ado was, in her youth, an impressive mare with an extremely deep girth and great length of rein. In type and colour she is the image of her sire. Her bloodlines carry a strong stamina bent making her ideal as the mother of a sport horse stallion. At 27 years she still remains active and healthy in retirement.

HEIR APPARENT II:
Described in the 1986 publication “Stallions and Studs of New Zealand` as A chestnut standing 16.21/2 hh unshod Heir Apparent II is noted for siring later maturing stayers including winners of the NZ Cup (3200m) the NZ St Ledger (2500m) and the Wellington Cup (3200m) all at Group 1 level. Unraced himself Heir Apparent II was extremely well bred being by Ribot from the Royal Charger mare Gay Hostess.

RIBOT: Ribot is one of the thoroughbred world`s absolute champions winning all of his 16 race starts, it is said he was never tested on the track. As a stallion he was major stamina influence and a prolific sire of sires. He appears in the first 3 generations of no less than 15 stallions to go to stud in New Zealand alone.

GAY HOSTESS: Heir Apparent II`s dam was the Royal Charger (by Nearco) mare Gay Hostess again through the Nearco connection a strong stamina influence, besides Heir Apparent II this mare left 4 champion race horses including Crowned Prince and Majestic Prince (fast becoming a sport horse influence) who both went on to be champion international stallions. The family has been a strong stallion source for many generations with the second dam (Your Hostess by Alibhai by Hyperion) and the third dam (Boudoir II) both leaving international stallions among there foals.

KASSALA: Much Ado`s dam was the Zebra mare Kassala who traces through her mother Fair Ribbon to Fair`s Fair by the strong sport horse influence Fair Trial. Fair Trial is from the mare Lady Juror by Son in Law who is also the sire of Maureen the mother of Furioso (by Precipitation) in turn father of the Hanoverian stallion and Voltaire II`s grand sire Furioso II. This blood in Damien creates an exceptional genetic balance of sport horse producers between his sire Voltaire II and his dam Much Ado.

Bloodline Summary: Top class modern New Zealand Sport horses are one of three things: Warmbloods of various denominations; thoroughbreds; or most often a combination of those two.

Damien`s father Voltaire II is the best of the New Zealand based warmblood stallions and is now proving himself a sire of sires in the equestrian world. As well as his warmblood pedigree he brings the thoroughbred lines of Precipitation through Furioso and Fair Trial both considered major sport horse influences.

Damien`s mother Much Ado through her father Heir Apparent II carries the blood of one of the world`s greatest sire producing thoroughbred families. When crossed with the stamina blood of Ribot, Heir Apparent II`s father, these sires have been exceptional (most recently Danehill and his sons and grandsons). This part of Damien`s family also supplies the blood of Hyperion long respected as being highly influential in the production of the modern sport horse.

In New Zealand this thoroughbred family through the efforts of stallions like Light Spirits and Stark South is producing a line of quality all round sport horses including thoroughbred dressage horses competing to medium, international show jumpers and intermediate and advanced eventers.

With the families continuing ability to produce world class thoroughbred sires of sires (Danehill alone is responsible for no less than 26 stallions who are or have stood at stud in New Zealand) they will continue for years to come to influence future New Zealand thoroughbred and crossbred sport horses.

Through her dam Kassala Damien`s mother provides a beautifully balanced re-injection of Voltaire II`s major thoroughbred influences Fair Trial through his son Fair`s Fair (Much Ado`s maternal grandfather) and Furioso through his maternal grandfather Son in Law who is also the sire of Lady Juror.

Damien is a sport horse stallion for the thinking breeder. He was bred to be a stallion – by a champion sire form a champion sire producing family

As an individual he poses striking overall looks with a balanced physique he is correct in every way. Although most definitely a stallion he is possessed of a beautiful nature and is as trustable and trainable as any stallion we have ever known. Stamped in the mould of his parents and grandparents Damien is sure to prove a prepotent sire reproducing the best of his genetic makeup in his sons and daughters.

When crossed with the best of New Zealand sport horse mares he should leave dressage horses with movement, presence and trainability the envy of many and show jumpers of true ability. Over thoroughbred mares in general he will leave good all-round horses with that little something extra to take them to the top and eventers that combine stamina with dressage ability well above average.

When used over thoroughbreds carrying Ribot blood and particularly when the blood is crossed with the female side of Much Ado`s pedigree though the likes of mares by Light Spirits, Stark South, Beldale Lear, and the daughters of the sons and grandsons of Danehill like Danske, Danasinga, Spartacus etc etc the results stand to be nothing short of spectacular in any equestrian discipline.

Damien is a stallion for the future – bred to be a stallion with the genetics to match the present and future mares available to the New Zealand sport horse breeder.
