Louella Stud

Since the founding of Louella Stud by the late Louis Massarella in 1934, we have always strived to produce versatile stock that will find success in every discipline. This continues to the present day.

We had a great start to 2008. We were thrilled to receive a Life Time achievement award for our outstanding contribution to British Breeding in 2008 from the British Breeding Breeders Awards.

Primitive Star, who was specifically bred for the job, and the young event sire Primitive Proposal are both worthy successors to continue the prolific line of the great Primitive Rising. Both stallions have successfully combined their stud duties with competition work. Primitive Proposal has already made a name for himself as a leading sire of show Horses and Primitive Star, who was sport horse champion, 2007 already has young horses making a mark on the eventing circuit, whilst he is excelling at dressage.

The young racehorse sires Rainbow High and Denounce are two of the best looking horses you could wish to see. We have no doubt that, with their pedigree and ability, their stock will be a success on the track and in the competition world.

Horses like Rainbow High are hard to come by, when one considers that he raced from 2 to 7 yrs (62 miles on the track) and retired perfectly sound in wind and limb. His first runners have been impressive.

Denounce was personally recommended to us by his trainer Henry Cecil, whom had considered him to be a definite Group winning prospect until he met with an unfortunate and serious injury. Denounce is an attractive proposition for breeders to tap into some of the top bloodlines in Europe.

Nomadic Way needs no introduction. He is a lovely horse and has become a leading U.K sire of jumpers. He was the sire of Himalayan Trail who stormed home in the 2008 John Smiths Midland Grand National.

With 130 acres of prime, well managed pasture, including 57 indoor stables, 2 indoor schools, a horse walker and 2 wash boxes, we are in an excellent position to offer a number of additional services to our clients. These include: foal and yearling sales preparation, weaning and handling of youngsters, rest and recuperation, breaking in, long term and permanent boarding, and foaling.

You are welcome to come and visit us at the stud near Coalville, Leicestershire, but please contact us in advance to make an appointment.

Since Louella stud was founded by the late Louis Massarella in 1934 when he stood his first coloured stallion, Salvador, who was later joined by the Arab stallion Yasam. These two sired the half brother and sister Billy Boy and La Princess out of Louis` hackney mare Baysing Sensation. They were chosen to represent Great Britain in Belgium on the junior British team. Unfortunately La Princess was injured coming off the boat but Billy Boy returned home an individual medal winner. Yasam also sired the Grade A mare Lollipop, bred by Louis and ridden by the late, great Ted Williams.

Long before most people had ever heard of a warmblood, always looking ahead and trying to breed the ultimate athlete, Louis recognised the need for a horse with substance. After much research and miles travelled, Louis and his brother Michael decided that the Hanoverian, with their bone, movement and athletic ability, was the right horse to use on our lightweight mares. After a trip to Verden in 1960 the two colts Ferdi and Duellist were purchased. The latter, after standing second to the famous Duft II in the championships, was destined for the state stud at Celle but was released by the director of the stud as a special favour to Louis and Michael. Duellist was later sold on to the Honourable Mrs. Kidd and became Maple Duellist. Ferdi was retained until the age of 17 when he was headhunted by the Schockemohle family to return to Germany. He was responsible for many top show jumping horses over the years.

Wohler II - Preparing to go to Australia Louella Stud has had great success with the Hanoverians, which have included the imported sires Gandolpho and Luciano – the home breeds, Wohler II – exported to Australia, the Grade A Temple Felson, and warmblood champions Adanus and Wendika. Undoubtedly the most famous of them all is Inschallah II, who holds a Supporters of British Breeding lifetime achievement award and is the only stallion to have ever featured in the top 5 of all three disciplines.

To name but a few of Inschallah II`s successful stock, he is the sire of Dressage horses Out of the Ordinary (559 pts), Byzantine (236 pts) and Rainford Louis (299 pts), all out of Louella mares. He also sired Advanced Eventers C`est Moi (bred by Louella), Just Tallulah and Mister Brough, all out of Louella sired mares, and Grade A`s City Slick, No Complaints and the brilliant Valhalla.

1975 heralded the beginning of 25 triumphant years with the National Light Horse Breeding Society, which brought with it 10 King George V Gold Cups for the supreme champion stallion and 11 Macdonald Buchanan Trophies for the champion young horse. This is testimony to Louis` outstanding judgement and his ability to visualise how an unfurnished colt in a trainer`s yard would mature into an eye catching stallion.

From the very early days of Hoarwithy, Sovereign King, Rapid Pass and Bustiki to Barley Hill, Cisto, Bohemond, Dual Champion Another Hoarwithy, 4 times champion Senang Hati, to the present day of the ever popular Criminal Law and dual champion Lord David S, many top horses have been bred along the way, sired by stallions that started their stud career as Louella Horses. These include the great King Boris (1207 pts) ridden by Mary King, the ever consistent Mr Pracatan (5th 6th 7th Badminton, 4th and 6th Burghley etc), The Psephologist (2nd Burghley, 3rd Badminton), Pasadena (568pts), Bowfred (418pts), The Honourable Bob, Flying tackle, Thrintoft Whion and Kings Flight.

1988 was a good year for Louella as we were lucky enough to purchase the great Primitive Rising. This was the first horse we had bought specifically for the National Hunt market and as always, with a Louella stallion, he had to fit our criteria – goods looks, athletic movement, breeding and temperament. As Alan Yuill Walker wrote in the Horse and Hound; ‘To stand at Louella, he must be good looking`.

Moor Lane, by Primitive Rising What a find Primitive Rising turned out to be; he was a leading National Hunt sire with offspring such as Moor Lane, Paperising, Suprising and Cheltenham festival winner Go Informal. He was also a prolific sire of eventers, winning 8 British Horse Foundation Awards and siring the winner of the Burghley Young Event Horse on 5 occasions. His advanced horses include Primitive Control (6th Badminton, 7th Burghley, competed for GB at the 2002 European championships), Primitive Streak (8th Bramham and Necarne), Jurassic Rising (3rd & 4th Bramham, 1st Blenheim, 5th Le Lion d`angers) and Limestone Rise (5th Chatsworth). He is also the sire of Port Patrick who was bred by Louella; a multiple hunter champion including top UK bred 4 yr old at the Royal Show 2005.

Louella stallions are famous worldwide and have been exported all over Europe, Australia, New Zealand, America and Asia as well as many to Ireland where they have gone on to be Dublin Show Champions. This led to Louis being named ‘Stallion man of the century` by the Irish Field. In 1990 Louis was the first person to export a horse to Russia since the 1917 revolution.

Louella have been the market leaders for many years. We have a wealth of experience and have continually produced the goods in our quest to breed the perfect horse. So please remember when choosing a stallion for your mare – whatever you want to win, Louella have a sire for all equestrian disciplines.
